Every tank should have a bottom feeder and/or an algae eater. They play a critical role in eating up food that has fallen to the bottom of the tank where your other fish can't get it to. Even goldfish can leave food behind, and actually goldfish are some of the messiest fish around. They need a bottom feeder more than other fish, even though goldfish spend most of their time picking up gravel and spitting it out, looking for food. Bottom feeders work more slowly and methodically around your tank, and they tend to hide in the corners where other fish don't go.
